Introduction: Navigating While Abroad

When travelling (reizen) in a Dutch-speaking country, you'll encounter various common situations at airports, train stations, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Being able to handle these interactions effectively in Dutch is a key B1 skill.

At the Airport/Station (Op de Luchthaven / Op het Station)

• Booking/Information:
• Ik wil graag een ticket/kaartje naar [destination] boeken. (I would like to book a ticket to [destination].)
• Enkele reis of retour? (One-way or return?)
• Hoe laat vertrekt de trein/het vliegtuig naar...? (What time does the train/plane to... depart?)
• Hoe laat komt de trein/het vliegtuig uit... aan? (What time does the train/plane from... arrive?)
• Vanaf welk perron/welke gate vertrekt...? (From which platform/gate does... depart?)
• Is er vertraging? (Is there a delay?)
• Waar is de informatiebalie? (Where is the information desk?)
• Checking In (Airport):
• Hier is mijn paspoort en ticket. (Here is my passport and ticket.)
• Heeft u bagage om in te checken? (Do you have luggage to check in?)
• Alleen handbagage. (Only hand luggage.)
• Mag dit als handbagage mee? (Can this be taken as hand luggage?)
• Waar is de douane/veiligheidscontrole? (Where is customs/the security check?)
• On the Train/Plane:
• Is deze plaats vrij? (Is this seat free?)
• Mag ik er even langs? (May I get past?)
• Wanneer zijn we in [destination]? (When will we be in [destination]?)

In the Hotel (In het Hotel)

• Checking In/Out:
• Ik heb een reservering op naam van [name]. (I have a reservation under the name [name].)
• Kan ik inchecken/uitchecken? (Can I check in / check out?)
• Hoe laat is het ontbijt? (What time is breakfast?)
• Tot hoe laat kan ik uitchecken? (Until what time can I check out?)
• Kan ik met creditcard/pinpas betalen? (Can I pay by credit card / debit card?)
• During Your Stay:
• Op welke verdieping is mijn kamer? (On which floor is my room?)
• Waar is de lift? (Where is the lift/elevator?)
• Kunt u mij om [time] wekken? (Can you give me a wake-up call at [time]?)
• Er is een probleem met mijn kamer. (There is a problem with my room.)
• De verwarming/airco/wifi werkt niet. (The heating/air conditioning/Wi-Fi isn't working.)
• Kunt u een taxi voor mij bellen? (Can you call a taxi for me?)
• Heeft u een plattegrond van de stad? (Do you have a city map?)

In the Restaurant/Cafë (In het Restaurant/Cafë)

• Ordering:
• Heeft u een tafel voor [number] personen? (Do you have a table for [number] people?)
• Mogen wij de menukaart/wijnkaart zien? (May we see the menu/wine list?)
• Wat kunt u aanbevelen? (What can you recommend?)
• Ik neem... / Ik wil graag... (I'll take... / I would like...)
• Voor mij graag... (For me..., please.)
• Heeft u vegetarische/glutenvrije opties? (Do you have vegetarian/gluten-free options?)
• Nog iets te drinken? (Anything else to drink?)
• During the Meal:
• Alles naar wens? (Is everything satisfactory?) - Common question from staff
• Het smaakt heerlijk! (It tastes delicious!)
• Mag ik nog wat brood/water? (May I have some more bread/water?)
• Paying:
• Mogen wij de rekening, alstublieft? (May we have the bill, please?)
• Kunnen we apart betalen? (Can we pay separately?)
• Alles bij elkaar. (All together.)
• Klopt zo. / Laat maar zitten. (Keep the change. - Informal)

In the Shop (In de Winkel)

• Looking for Something:
• Ik ben op zoek naar... (I am looking for...)
• Heeft u...? (Do you have...?)
• Waar kan ik ... vinden? (Where can I find...?)
• Asking About Products:
• Hoeveel kost dit? (How much does this cost?)
• Kan ik dit passen? (Can I try this on?)
• Waar is de paskamer? (Where is the fitting room?)
• Heeft u dit ook in een andere maat/kleur? (Do you also have this in another size/colour?)
• Paying:
• Ik neem deze. (I'll take this one.)
• Kan ik pinnen? (Can I pay by debit card?)
• Wilt u de bon? (Do you want the receipt?)
• Kan ik dit terugbrengen/ruilen? (Can I return/exchange this?)

Asking for Directions (De weg vragen)

• Pardon, kunt u mij helpen? (Excuse me, can you help me?)
• Ik zoek [place]. (I'm looking for [place].)
• Hoe kom ik bij het station / het museum / ...? (How do I get to the station / the museum / ...?)
• Is het ver lopen? (Is it far to walk?)
• Linksaf / rechtsaf / rechtdoor. (Left / right / straight ahead.)
• Bedankt voor uw hulp. (Thanks for your help.)

These phrases cover many common situations encountered while travelling. Practice them before your trip. Don't be afraid to ask for repetition (Kunt u dat herhalen?) or clarification (Wat bedoelt u?) if needed. Politeness (alstublieft, dank u wel) is always appreciated.
