Possessive Pronouns (A1)

These words show ownership or belonging (whose is it?). They come before the noun.

• mijn = my
• mijn boek (my book), mijn fiets (my bicycle)
• jouw / je = your (singular, informal)
• jouw huis (your house), je tas (your bag)
• Use jouw for emphasis, je is common.
• uw = your (singular or plural, formal)
• uw naam (your name), uw auto (your car)
• zijn = his / its
• zijn hond (his dog), zijn kleur (its colour)
• haar = her
• haar jas (her coat)
• ons / onze = our
• Use ons before singular het nouns: ons huis (our house)
• Use onze before singular de nouns AND all plural nouns: onze auto (our car), onze boeken (our books), onze huizen (our houses)
• jullie = your (plural, informal)
• jullie leraar (your teacher), jullie fietsen (your bicycles)
• hun = their
• hun kinderen (their children), hun tafel (their table)

Examples:

• Dat is mijn fiets. (That is my bicycle.)
• Waar is jouw broer? (Where is your brother?)
• Wij zien onze vrienden. (We see our friends.)
• Is dit jullie huis? (Is this your (plural) house?)
• Hun auto is rood. (Their car is red.)
